John Houston Withers, Jr. was born in Dallas and graduated from Hillcrest High School. He attended Texas A&M University in College Station where he played football, studied engineering and participated in the Corp of Cadets.
John graduated from A&M with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in December of 1983 and received his commission in the United States Army Reserve. Following the completion of the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he returned to Dallas to attend the SMU School of Law where he graduated in May of 1987.
In September 1987, John was hired by John Vance as an Assistant District Attorney. He was licensed to practice law by the State of Texas on November 6, 1987. He worked his way through the District Attorney's Office and was made a Chief Felony prosecutor and later Chief of the Commercial Auto Theft Task Force. While at the District Attorney's Office, he prosecuted thousands of criminals, personally participating in 185 jury trials including two capital murder cases.
After he left the District Attorney's Office, he accepted a position with the law firm of Fletcher & Springer, L.L.P which concentrates on insurance defense. On April 1, 1996, he joined his father and started the law firm of Withers & Withers, P.C.
In addition to the private practice of law, John is a JAG officer for the U.S. Army Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, currently serving as Team Chief in the 2nd LSO. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff Officers' Course and the 44th Military Judge Course at the U.S. Army JAG School in Charlottesville, Virginia.
John currently handles cases in the area of Family Law, Criminal Law, Personal Injury, Insurance Defense, Wills, Probate, Military Law and general litigation with a concentration in the areas of Family and Criminal Law.
John is Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and is a member of the State Bar College. He is also a member of the Dallas Bar Association, the Dallas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.
